The investiture of Hon. Audrey Fleissig to the Federal Bench was held in the en banc courtroom of the Thomas F. Eagleton Federal Courthouse. Looking on is U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, who nominated her.
The Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition is a statewide opportunity for high school aged students to learn about trial procedures, strategies and tactics – and to role play both plaintiff and defense positions. This image was from the final trial of the two top competing teams in 2011 before the winning team advanced to the State Championship that followed the St. Louis competitions.
Photographed in the den of her home, Lynn Whaley Vogel had just been elected President of the Missouri Bar. As a solo practitioner, Vogel has been active in professional organizations throughout her career. This image reflected her open and candid nature.
Motion for Kids is an annual holiday party for over 3,000 children whose family has been impacted by the justice system. These are children whose one-parent or foster families who would normally not be privileged to play and be entertained in the Edward Jones Dome, or take home presents purchased for them by local attorneys and law firms. This young man was on his way home with holiday presents and something to look forward to during the holiday season.
Shot from the Malcolm M. Martin Memorial Park and Fountain platform in East St. Louis, attorney John Farmer stood in front of the Mississippi River and the city of St. Louis – both that are key to his practice of Admiralty Law.
Then Chief Justice of the Missouri Supreme Court, Hon. Mary Rhodes Russell, was a real trooper when this image was shot. The Missouri Supreme Court was undergoing a massive rehabilitation project, which included no air conditioning on the day it was shot. Thanks to her patience, some portable fans, and quick lighting we were able to get the cover we wanted.
Attorney Ryan Kemper, who practices environmental law, was photographed for this cover in the studio against a green screen for time convenience, then married to an image from a wind farm near Bloomington, Illinois to create a topic-sensitive cover that told the story.
The Sweet Potato Project led by Sylvester Brown, Jr.,, was one of the 2013 Spirit of Justice Award winners. Based in North St. Louis, the project teaches inner city youth how to become entrepreneurs by planting sweet potato plots on empty lots, studying marketing, business management and sales techniques. Then harvesting their crop and making end products like sweet potato cookies that they sell throughout the community.
Maurice Graham, then President of the St. Louis Bar Foundation, was featured on this cover because of his philanthropic leadership motivating other lawyers to throw their support behind this charitable organization.
Frankie Muse Freeman, the first woman to be appointed to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (by President Johnson), dedicated her legal career to advancing civil rights and human rights here in St. Louis and throughout the nation. I had the privilege to interview and photograph her many times, and to get to know her well. Through appointments to boards, commissions, and other organizations, as well as her private law practice, she has sought the promise of justice and equality in society.
